In Loving Memory
Colleen Olson

Colleen Dawn O’Connor Olson of Cave City, Kentucky passed away in her home on September 14, 2018, at mid-day.  She was surrounded by family and left us without the terrible pain and anxiety that might have been possible. She is survived by her husband Rick Olson of Cave City and her sister Heather Barker of Seattle, WA.  Colleen was born to Clara May O’Connor and Robert Talmadge O’Connor in Bellingham, Washington on December 18, 1966.  She graduated from Lake Stevens High School in 1985 and then graduated from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA in 1989.  Colleen worked at Grand Canyon for the Fred Harvey Company and then for the Mammoth Cave Hotel starting in 1992.  In 1993, Colleen became an Interpretive Ranger at Mammoth Cave National Park and served in that capacity for 25 years until her retirement in 2018.  She was a prolific writer and published five books on different aspects of Mammoth Cave plus writing the history chapter for a compendium book on Mammoth Cave.  If there is one word that can describe how Colleen was regarded by her co-workers and friends, it would have to be “beloved”.  She is missed terribly.  There will be a celebration of Colleen’s life next summer at the Mammoth Cave Hotel. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, please give donations to the Friends of Mammoth Cave National Park.

Bransford Family Memorial

As many of you are aware, Jerry  Bransford is raising money to build a memorial in the Bransford family cemetery at Mammoth Cave National Park. His family has an amazing and storied history at the park, and I believe that this is something that would be a great tribute to him and his families legacy. Our group may also have an opportunity to help in the efforts to restore the cemetery and create this memorial. Please find out more on Facebook, there are some amazing stories and history of his family, and while there consider donating something towards the memorial. From the site.

“Jerry Bransford’s dream is to build a memorial in the Bransford cemetery at Mammoth Cave as a tribute to all the past slave guides and the entire Bransford family, especially Mat and Nick. He also would like to pass on his stories and memories to his future descendants utilizing the cemetery and memorial. The cemetery would become a place for those who visit to remember a section of Mammoth Cave’s history.”

Will Bransford, circa 1900
